Stephanie By Jen Dunford-Roskos

she’s crying because she’s dopesick

and can’t find no tricks to

pay her way healthy again

leans into me like a friend telling secrets

asks if I have any pills

to postpone the inevitable

I shake my head sympathetically

my husband has the pills and

I ain’t seen him in a while

she heads round the corner to

circle the block again, shoulders slouched,

tired from carrying all she owns

from car to car

street to street

in a threadbare knapsack
